When Do You Need a Level 2 Chimney Inspection?

Situations That Require a Level 2 (Per NFPA 211)

1. Real-estate transactions. Buying or selling a home. Many CT lenders, inspectors, and buyers now require documented Level 2 chimney inspections before closing. If you’re selling, having one already done removes a common closing hurdle.

2. After a chimney fire. Even a minor chimney fire (many go unnoticed) can damage flue tiles, warp dampers, and compromise the chimney’s structural integrity. Signs of a past fire include puffy honeycomb creosote, warped damper, or discolored exterior brick.

3. After a lightning strike or major storm. High winds, lightning, and severe weather can crack tiles, dislodge caps, and cause structural damage invisible from ground level.

4. When appliances change. Switching from oil to gas, adding a fireplace insert, installing a wood stove, or converting a fireplace to gas all require a Level 2 to verify the flue is safe for the new appliance and correctly sized.

5. When a Level 1 finds something concerning. If your annual sweep’s Level 1 visual check reveals evidence of a problem (debris in the firebox, poor draft, damper issues, staining), a Level 2 confirms the scope.
