Central Connecticut winters don’t ease in. One week we’re still cutting the grass, and the next there’s frost on the windshield and a real reason to light the fireplace. If your chimney hasn’t been swept and inspected since the last heating season, that first cold snap is not the moment you want to find out something’s wrong.

Here’s why we start reminding customers in late July, and why the smart play is to book your annual

chimney sweep

 before the heating-season rush.

## Why the Late Summer Window Matters

Every fall, chimney sweeps across Hartford, Tolland, and Litchfield counties get slammed. From mid-September through late November, our phones do not stop. The reason is human — most homeowners think about their chimney the day they light the first fire, and then everyone calls at once.

If you book that week, you’re competing with hundreds of other homeowners. Even with our full fleet of trucks, appointment slots fill up 2–4 weeks out by mid-September, and by mid-October we’re regularly booked into December for masonry work.

Late summer — July, August, early September — is different. Same-week scheduling is easy. Free virtual assessments come back within a day. And if the inspection finds something (a cracked liner, a bad flashing, a failing crown), you have time to fix it before you actually need the fireplace.

## What the Annual Sweep Actually Prevents

There are three problems an annual sweep prevents that homeowners underestimate:

**Chimney fires from creosote.** The three

stages of creosote

each carry a different fire risk. Stage 3 — glazed, tar-like buildup — is the leading cause of residential chimney fires. Once a year, we remove it before it can ignite.

**Carbon monoxide back-up.** Blocked or partially blocked flues can push carbon monoxide back into the home. Every sweep includes a visual safety check that catches this early.

**Draft problems and smoke back-up.** Nothing ruins a fireplace evening like smoke pouring into the living room. Most draft problems come from a partially blocked flue, a debris-clogged cap, or animal nesting. Annual maintenance catches all three.

## What a Late-Summer Booking Looks Like

For most central CT homes, here’s a typical late-summer service call:

1. **Book by text or phone.** Send us your address and a rough sense of what you have — single fireplace, wood stove, oil furnace flue, insert, etc. We text back available windows.
2. **Sweep visit (45–60 minutes).** We arrive on time, drop cloths from the door to the firebox, HEPA vacuum on. Rotary sweep, visual inspection, cleanup.
3. **Findings report.** If we spot anything — a hairline crown crack, a missing cap, a loose flashing — you get photos and a quote before we leave.
4. **Optional: Level 2 video scan.** If it’s been years since your last inspection, or you’re planning to sell in the next year, add on a

    video scan

that documents the entire flue interior.

## The Bonus: Non-Rushed Repair Time

The biggest hidden benefit of a late-summer sweep isn’t the sweep itself. It’s the time you buy if something needs fixing.

Discover a cracked chimney crown in September? We can rebuild it in October. Discover the same crown in November, and the concrete may not set properly in the cold, or we can’t get on your calendar until January.

The same applies to masonry repair, liner work, and flashing — all of which benefit from warm, dry weather.

## Book This Week

If you burn wood, run an oil furnace on a masonry flue, or have any kind of active fireplace, the annual sweep is due before winter. Text or call us today and we’ll get you on the calendar while there’s still schedule flexibility.
